How the due date is worked out
A dog's pregnancy lasts about 63 days from ovulation. Because mating can happen a day or two before ovulation, a date counted from the mating day is usually right within a few days either way. The calculator adds 63 days to the mating date and shows the normal whelping window of days 58–68 — puppies born in this window are considered full term.
Week-by-week pregnancy timeline
- Weeks 1–2: fertilisation and implantation. No visible signs; keep routine normal.
- Week 3 (days 21–25): a vet can confirm pregnancy by ultrasound; some dogs show mild morning sickness or go off food.
- Week 4 (days 25–30): vet may feel the puppies by palpation; a relaxin blood test can confirm pregnancy.
- Week 5: organs develop, the belly starts to fill out, appetite increases — switch to a high-quality puppy or performance diet as your vet advises.
- Week 6: the belly is visibly larger, teats enlarge, nesting behaviour can begin.
- Week 7 (day 45+): an X-ray can count the puppies; some hair loss around the belly is normal.
- Week 8–9 (days 56–63): milk may appear, the dog becomes restless and nests — labour is near.
Vet visits during pregnancy
Book a check-up as soon as pregnancy is suspected. Typical visits: ultrasound around day 21–25 to confirm, X-ray around day 45–55 to count puppies (useful so you know when labour is finished), and a final check if she passes day 68. Keep vaccinations and worming up to date as your vet advises — never give medication without checking first.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if: labour has not started by day 68; strong contractions last over 30 minutes with no puppy; more than 2 hours pass between puppies; there is heavy bleeding or green discharge before any puppy is born; or the dog seems in severe pain or exhausted. A stuck puppy is an emergency.

Dog Pregnancy Calculator FAQs
How long are dogs pregnant?
About 63 days from ovulation, with a normal range of 58–68 days from mating. Smaller and larger breeds follow the same timing.
How accurate is a mating-based due date?
Usually within a few days. Mating can happen 1–2 days before ovulation, so the true due date can shift slightly. Vets count from ovulation when it is known (for example with progesterone testing).
When can a vet confirm my dog is pregnant?
By ultrasound from about day 21–25, by relaxin blood test from day 25–30, and by X-ray from day 45, which also shows how many puppies to expect.
What should I feed a pregnant dog?
A high-quality, complete diet is usually enough for the first half. From around week 5, most vets recommend moving to a puppy or performance food and increasing portions gradually — ask your vet for amounts for your dog.
What if my dog goes past day 68 without labour?
Call your vet the same day. A pregnancy going well past term can mean a problem, and the vet may want to examine her or induce labour.
