The short answer: 63 days

A dog's pregnancy lasts about 63 days from ovulation, which usually works out as 58–68 days from the mating date. Mating can happen a day or two before ovulation, so the mating-based count is slightly looser. If you only know the mating date, use our dog pregnancy calculator to get the expected due date.

Does breed or size change the length?

No — gestation length is remarkably consistent across breeds. A Chihuahua and a Great Dane both average 63 days. What differs is litter size: small breeds often have 1–4 puppies while large breeds can have 8–12 or more. Very large litters sometimes arrive a day or two early; single-puppy litters can run a little late.

The three trimesters in brief

Like humans, a dog's pregnancy divides into three rough thirds: days 1–21 (fertilisation and implantation — no visible change), days 22–42 (organs form, the belly starts to grow, vet can confirm by ultrasound then X-ray), and days 43–63 (rapid growth, nesting behaviour, milk production). See the full week-by-week guide for what to do at each stage.

When to worry about the timing

Call your vet if labour has not started by day 68 from mating, or if there are signs of trouble earlier: heavy bleeding, green discharge before any puppy, strong contractions for 30+ minutes with no puppy, or more than 2 hours between puppies. Puppies born before day 58 are premature and need urgent veterinary care.

FAQs

Are dogs pregnant for 2 or 3 months?

About 2 months — 63 days on average, roughly 9 weeks. It is commonly rounded to 'about two months'.

Can a dog be pregnant for 70 days?

It is possible if the mating date was well before ovulation, but a true 70-day gestation from ovulation is unusual. If your count says 70 days with no labour, call your vet.

Do first-time mothers take longer?

Not noticeably. Maiden bitches follow the same 58–68 day range, though their litters are often smaller.
