How to read the chart

Find your puppy's breed-size row and their age column. The figures are typical ranges, not targets — healthy puppies vary. If your puppy sits far outside the range, check with your vet rather than changing food on your own.

When growth stops

Toy and small breeds finish around 8–12 months, medium breeds 12–15 months, large breeds 15–18 months, and giant breeds can keep filling out until 18–24 months. Height usually finishes before weight — a lanky teenager often broadens out over the following months.

Feeding through the growth stages

Feed a complete puppy food matched to breed size (large-breed puppy formulas control calcium and growth rate, which protects joints). Follow the packet's weight-based amounts and adjust monthly — most puppies need less than owners think. Weigh monthly and plot against this chart.

FAQs

My puppy is above the chart — is that bad?

Not necessarily, but check with your vet. Fast growth in large breeds stresses joints; your vet may adjust the diet.

Why do giant breeds need special puppy food?

They grow for up to 2 years. Large-breed puppy formulas slow the growth rate slightly and balance calcium, reducing the risk of developmental bone problems.

Should I switch to adult food at 12 months?

Small breeds: around 10–12 months. Large and giant breeds: 15–18 months, sometimes 24 for giants. Ask your vet — switching too early or late both have downsides.
